DSC uses standardized user-network commands and<br \/>\nresponses to access the following services and features:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i>Async Data Service<\/i> (ADS) provides async data service<br \/>\nbetween wireless and PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network)<br \/>\nusers. It uses circuit-mode access over the radio interface and<br \/>\nmodem-based connections into the PSTN.<\/li>\n<li><i>Direct Async Data Service<\/i> (DADS) provides async data<br \/>\nservice between wireless users and PDN (Packet Data Network) users<br \/>\nor ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) users. It uses<br \/>\ncircuit-mode access over the radio interface and direct-digital<br \/>\nconnections into PDNs or the ISDN. Note that PDNs include the<br \/>\ninternet.<\/li>\n<li><i>Fax Service<\/i> provides fax service between wireless and<br \/>\nPSTN users. It uses circuit-mode access over the radio<br \/>\ninterface.<\/li>\n<li><i>General User Datagram Protocol Transport Service<\/i><br \/>\n(GUTS) provides data services between wireless users and a<br \/>\nteleservice server. It uses packet-mode access over the radio<br \/>\ninterface and direct-digital connections into the teleservice<br \/>\nserver.<\/li>\n<li><i>Short-Message Service<\/i> (SMS) provides short-message<br \/>\nservices between wireless users and a message center. It uses<br \/>\npacket mode access over the radio interface and direct-digital<br \/>\nconnections into the message center.<\/li>\n<li><i>Autodial Feature<\/i> provides methods for DTE (Data<br \/>\nTerminal Equipment) to autodial voice calls.<\/li>\n<li><i>EGPRS<\/i>-136 provides packet-data service between<br \/>\nwireless users and PDN (Packet Data Network) users or ISDN<br \/>\n(Integrated Services Digital Network) users. It uses packet-mode<br \/>\naccess over the radio interface. See TIA\/EIA-136-351 for the<br \/>\nspecification of commands and responses used for this service.A<br \/>\nmobile termination provides access to these services and features<br \/>\nvia a data port.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>DSC requires an underlying link protocol as specified ed in<br \/>\nTIA-136-310 [10]. It also requires cellular call control, datagram<br \/>\ncontrol, short message control, and other cellular functions, as<br \/>\nspecified in other parts of TIA-136 [9].<\/p>\n<p>To aid the reader, \u00a7\u00a7 2 and 3 contain descriptive information: \u00a7<br \/>\n2 pro6 vides an overview; \u00a7 3 describes DSC&#039;s structure. \u00a7\u00a7 4 and 5<br \/>\ncontain requirements: \u00a7 4 specifies signals; \u00a7 5 specifies<br \/>\nprocesses. References appear in \u00a7 6. Finally, Annex A provides<br \/>\nguidelines to application programmers, and Annex B lists and<br \/>\ndefines acronyms. Note that \u00a7 5 refers to figures too large to fit<br \/>\nwithin the body of the standard. These figures are enclosed in a<br \/>\nseparate envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Readers will find the following documents helpful in<br \/>\nunderstanding this standard: X.200 [6] and Z.100 [7].<\/p>\n<p>Similar to X.200, this standard uses reference models to<br \/>\norganize concepts and requirements into a logical structure.
