L'ISO 17624:2009 fournit les spécifications relatives à ce qui suit:
- les exigences communes des transactions IAV/IAE, qui définissent les étapes identiques pour toutes les transactions IAV/IAE;
- une interface d'application IAV/IAE fondée sur des protocoles d'application hertzienne standardisés (désignée par l'appellation «Interface radio») prenant en charge les exigences des transactions IAV, de façon à assurer l'interopérabilité.
L'ISO 17624:2009 est une norme d'interface, adhérant au modèle d'interconnexion de systèmes ouverts (OSI) (ISO/CEI 7498-1); en tant que telle, elle n'est pas concernée par les choix de mise en œuvre qui seront faits sur chaque côté de l'interface radio entre l'«équipement fixe» et l'«OBE».
