INTRODUCTION<\/strong><\/p>\n

ESDU 960306<\/sup> describes the nature of the lateral
\nresponse to vortex shedding of structures of circular cross
\nsection. It then develops a method for calculation of this response
\ntogether with the data required for its implementation. This method
\ntakes account also of the lateral response to buffeting by
\nacross-wind atmospheric turbulence components, using the methods of
\nESDU 890495<\/sup>. Comparisons of predictions with both model
\nand full-scale measurements and a discussion of methods of reducing
\nthe response to vortex shedding are also included in ESDU
\n96030.<\/p>\n

The calculation method is complex and it can realistically be
\nimplemented only through a computer program. A program is currently
\navailable as a Microsoft Excel* spreadsheet Module.<\/p>\n

This Item gives guidance on the use of the Excel Module. Section
\n2 considers installation and running\u2020<\/sup> of the Module.
\nSection 3 describes the input data required and Section 4 the
\noutput produced by the program. Section 5 describes a set of Worked
\nExamples. Appendix A provides some guidance on values for input
\ndata.<\/p>\n

The method can be applied for the following structure types and
\nflow conditions:<\/p>\n

\u2022 parallel-sided, tapered and stepped structures,<\/p>\n

\u2022 circular or regular polygon cross section (8 or more
\nsides),<\/p>\n

\u2022 smooth or rough surfaces (for structures with ancillaries such
\nas ladders attached, the method applies only if the ancillary is
\nentirely within the main structure wake),<\/p>\n

\u2022 cantilevered structures and structures between end
\nfixings,<\/p>\n

\u2022 vertical, horizontal or inclined structures,<\/p>\n

\u2022 structures with or without strakes,<\/p>\n

\u2022 uniform or shear flow,<\/p>\n

\u2022 smooth or turbulent flow,<\/p>\n

\u2022 normal or yawed flow (a yawed wind affects the response only
\nif the structure is not vertical),<\/p>\n

\u2022\u00a0natural wind (full scale), simulated wind (wind
\ntunnel),<\/p>\n

\u2022 internal flows in which the structure causes a blockage of
\nless than 10%.<\/p>\n

Example applications include stacks (chimneys) and process plant
\ntowers, lighting standards and elements of lattice structures.<\/p>\n

Several worked examples are described in Section 5 and some
\nguidance on sources of input data is given in Appendix A.<\/p>\n
