Both constant and varying crank angular velocity<br \/>\ndefinitions are permissible. Power is transmitted between the crank<br \/>\nand wheel by either roller bearings or pins. Crowned or cylindrical<br \/>\nprofiles of these components are included. Two design strategies<br \/>\nare provided. The designer may specify the Geneva wheel dimensions<br \/>\nand the distance between crank and wheel shaft centres will then be<br \/>\ncalculated. Alternatively, the centre distance is specified and<br \/>\nthen the wheel diameter is evaluated.<\/p>\n<p>The program determines the dependent dimensions, wheel motion,<br \/>\ncontact and bearing forces plus the crank torque and power required<br \/>\nto drive the crank and produce the specified motion. Contact<br \/>\nstresses and the dimensions of the contact area on the slot face<br \/>\nand roller (or pin) are determined and compared with the specified<br \/>\nlimits. When a bearing is selected, its strength and life are<br \/>\ncalculated and compared with the published performance criteria.<br \/>\nSimilarly, the characteristics of a lubricant film are evaluated<br \/>\nwhen oil lubrication is specified. If any of the applicable<br \/>\nperformance limits are exceeded, the program will issue an<br \/>\nappropriate warning. If the crank angular velocity has been<br \/>\nspecified as constant, the limiting speed will be determined and a<br \/>\nwarning issued if this speed is exceeded.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to a descriptive output file reproducing the input<br \/>\nspecifications and listing the results of the analysis, the program<br \/>\ngenerates a series of data files in ASCII format. Separate files<br \/>\nare provided which define the wheel motion, mechanism forces,<br \/>\ncontact stresses and deformations and lubrication data (when<br \/>\napplicable). A DXF output file provides a graphical representation<br \/>\nof the outline of the Geneva wheel, for the external Geneva<br \/>\nonly.<\/p>\n<p>The analytical techniques implemented in the program are those<br \/>\ndescribed in ESDU 96002, entitled &#034;Geneva mechanism. Part 1:<br \/>\nDesign&#034; (Reference 2) and ESDU ME3, entitled &#034;Analysis of Geneva<br \/>\nmechanisms: derivation of kinematic and kinetostatic equations&#034;<br \/>\n(Reference 1).
